MLS Fantasy is here with the season upon us, and you want to build the best possible defense. You don't want to have a slow defender who isn't good at tackling or even good at winning balls in the air.
You need those rock MLS Fantasy defenders who can put in the crunching tackles and get you the points you deserve. But tackles get you points you say….well yes, but how about those players who can cross the ball and create a goal? Those points are worth a little more. So to get into the nitty gritty, you need a balance of offensive punch and defensive punch from your defenders.
Let's start with the best of the bunch, the top tier of MLS fantasy defenders.
1. The Top Tier MLS Fantasy Defenders
| Rank | Player Name | Team | Value |
| 1. | Justin Morrow | Toronto FC | $6 |
| 2. | Ike Opara | Sporting Kansas City | $6 |
| 3. | Leandro Gonzalez-Pirez | Seattle Sounders | $6 |
| 4. | Graham Zusi | Sporting Kansas City | $6 |
| 5. | Matt Besler | Sporting Kansas City | $6 |
If you thought you'd see three Sporting Kansas City players in the top tier of MLS fantasy defenders… then you would have been right. SKC are considered one of the favourites going into this season and they will be one of the hardest teams to beat this season. Justin Morrow was one of the best MLS fantasy producing defenders last season as he finished second to Gonzalez-Pirez and Opara. Morrow finished with 197 points and averaged 4.2 FPPG.
Ike Opara is one part of the three headed monster that SKC deploys and he is one of the best in the game. Opara finished second in points with 202 and averaged 4.6 FPPG. Expect him to do similar this MLS fantasy season.
Leandro Gonzalez-Pirez is one of the best defenders in the MLS as well, and he showed that last season, especially in MLS fantasy. Gonzalez-Pirez finished first in MLS fantasy points with 204 and also registered 51 FPPG and with Atlanta getting stronger he should have a season very much like the last…so bank on him if you have the money. Graham Zusi is another part of the SKC defence and well…he's just as good.
Zusi is a wing back much like Morrow is and can put up serious points as well. He can play as a midfielder also, as he did last season, but being classified as a defender this year will only help him score more points. Matt Besler, another one of the SKC defenders, registered 178 points last season and averaged 4.4 FPPG as well. So basically what we're saying is you can't go wrong with any of the SKC defenders…..they were the best defensive team in 2017.
Now that we've covered the top tier, let's move on to the middle of the pack defenders.
