Which players should you build around and which players should you fade in DFS as we tip off tonight's NBA action? Our experts have the answers.
Today's panel includes ESPN Fantasy's Jim McCormick, André Snellings and Kyle Soppe, as well as DFS expert Renee Miller.
Players to build around
-
Complacency yields poor results. André Snellings discusses the need to load up your fantasy hoops lineups with only the hungriest of players, lest your appetite for wins go unsatiated.
Jim McCormick -- Kevin Durant, Golden State Warriors
The absence of Stephen Curry has unquestionably hurt the Warriors' offense this season, but it's also supplied Durant with Westbrookian usage. Although the team is 1-2 during the past three games, Durant has averaged 38.7 PPG, 9.7 RPG, 4.7 APG and three blocks in that span. Vegas projects a point total hovering around 225 for this contest with the Lakers, suggesting Durant's already awesome ceiling is even a bit higher tonight.
Renee Miller -- Kevin Durant, Golden State Warriors
What more do you need to know other than that the Warriors play the Lakers in the night's highest scoring and fastest paced game and are without Stephen Curry and Draymond Green? This is a pretty ugly slate of four games overall, and Durant still won't have the 100 percent ownership he deserves. He's the must-play guy for me tonight, as he's averaged almost 62 fantasy points vs. the Lakers this season, is coming off a huge 69 fantasy point game, and is poised for an even bigger role tonight.
André Snellings -- Kevin Durant, Golden State Warriors
The Warriors will be without Stephen Curry and Draymond Green on Wednesday, and Klay Thompson is listed as questionable as well. Assuming that he also isn't rested, which has not been reported anywhere, Durant will have a heavy load to carry. In the three games since Curry went down with injury, Durant has averaged 38.7 points, 9.7 rebounds, 4.7 assists, 5.0 3-pointers and 3.0 blocks.
Kyle Soppe -- Brandon Jennings, Milwaukee Bucks
It was just one game, but how can you not be intrigued by Jennings' 16-point, 8-rebound, 12-assist debut with the Bucks on Monday night in Memphis? Oscar Robertson and Russell Westbrook don't need to worry about the season triple double quite yet, but there is reason to think another big night could be in store. Keep in mind that the Grizzlies rank dead last in pace of play and 20th in defense, while tonight's opponent ranks ninth in pace and 27th in defense. Milwaukee is trying to hang onto their playoff spot, so I wouldn't be surprised if they give Jennings extended run to see if they've uncovered something special with this 10-day contract, and thus he should provide a nice DFS value at his current price.
Players to fade
Jim McCormick -- Goran Dragic, Miami Heat
I'm fairly confident Dragic will deliver 30 fantasy points in Sacramento tonight, but I'm not bullish on his upside, which appears a bit limited. The Kings are 28th in pace (possessions per 48 minutes) and the Heat 25th, thus this could be a down-tempo matchup that curbs the fantasy ceiling for key players such as Dragic.
Renee Miller -- Terry Rozier, Boston Celtics
This will be an unpopular fade, given that the Celtics can barely man the court tonight, but Rozier's salary is at a level where it's going to be hard for him to reach value. Washington is a middle of the road defense and small road favorite in the night's lowest point total game. With so much shift in the Boston rotation, I expect some growing pains before we can expect 35-40 fantasy points from Rozier in anything but a cake matchup. In his price range, I'd much rather use Eric Bledsoe vs. Orlando or Lonzo Ball vs. Golden State.
André Snellings -- Bradley Beal, Washington Wizards
Beal is the fourth-most expensive healthy player on FanDuel and the third-most expensive on DraftKings, but his production has been relatively pedestrian over the last week. He's averaging only 16.3 points, 4.3 assists and 3.7 rebounds per game over that span.
Kyle Soppe -- Zach Randolph, Sacramento Kings
The veteran big man has been a DNP-CD in three of seven games this month, so there is clearly some fatigue concern here and I'm simply not comfortable investing in him after he played both ends of a back-to-back on Sunday/Monday. Even when Z-Bo has been on the floor, he's been settling for deep jumpers (in four games, he's 2/14 from distance) and with this game featuring two of the slower offenses in the NBA, I just don't think there is enough volume here to make Randolph a viable play. If you're looking to spend down at the PF position tonight, the versatile James Johnson would be my pick.
