ESPN+ launches April 12 with all out-of-market MLS matches - Sounder At Heart

ESPN's live and on-demand sports streaming service, ESPN+, has a launch date. Starting April 12, MLS matches from around the league that aren't local to the user or broadcast nationally will be available through ESPN's new apps or through their website. The subscription-based service runs $4.99 per month, and also features MLB and NHL games, among a slate of additional content.

ESPN's announcement doesn't mention USL coverage, although more sports and leagues for the platform will be revealed in the coming weeks. One report indicates games from the the division II league are likely to be available on the platform. Fans of college soccer will also be able to catch NCAA matches from more than a dozen conferences.

The service will launch alongside a major redesign of ESPN's app for various platforms as the company seeks to create a personalized sports streaming service that exists across mobile and digital living room apps. Viewers who authenticate and stream broadcast ESPN content through their cable subscription will access that service through the same app.

All 250-plus out-of-market MLS matches will be available with the basic ESPN+ subscription, unlike the NHL and MLB packages that require additional monthly fees for all-access. If the audience and demand is there for MLS this season, don't be surprised if there will be an upcharge to stream more than a handful of featured weekly games in the future.
