Higuain, 33, had his contract extended through the 2019 season. Earlier in the year, he became the first Crew player to reach the 50-50 club and his career totals now stand at 50 goals and 52 assists.
Higuain signed as a Designated Player in late July of the 2012 season and won the MLS Newcomer of the Year Award with five goals and seven assists in 13 games. He was named the Crew's MVP in 2013, 2014 and 2017.
Crew owner Anthony Precourt is seeking to find a new home for the team in Austin, though it is still unclear if or when the club might Columbus. Crew head coach Gregg Berhalter impressed upon Higuain that he can't worry the club's future, something he can't control.
"I signed this new deal as a player of Columbus Crew," Higuain told the Columbus media after Thursday's practice. "No one knows what is going to happen. I have no control of that situation. I'm a player. I'm a father of three kids. I have to work. I'm glad to keep working here."<
