The Chicago Fire scrounged up a 2-2 draw with the Portland Timbers on Saturday, earning their first point of the season. A point is a point, but it's also one point from a possible nine and came despite an overall poor performance by the Fire.
Yet there were some bright spots from that game beside the result, and an obvious one was Bastian Schweinsteiger's performance. Positioned initially as a #10, Basti soon dropped deep and played as a sweeper for much of the game. That allowed him to shore up some deficiencies in the Fire's defense while still creating opportunities for counterplay. He also played a role in both of Chicago's goals, including a secondary assist on Brandon Vincent's equalizer. In short, he was a crucial to the Fire getting something out of that game.
Basti's performance did not go unnoticed. Earlier today, MLS released their Team Of The Week for Matchweek 5, and sure enough, our big handsome German was on it.
Schweinsteiger joins the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic (who did pretty well for himself in his debut for the Galaxy), Jozy Altidore, Carlos Vela, and former Fire goalkeeper Sean Johnson. Here's the full TOTW below:
