The MLS kit chart breakdown - Dallas News

We've been sharing Kyle Burkholder's (@kyleburkholder) fun MLS kit chart on twitter this year. And as I was looking at it today I decided to break it down.

Some Observations

  • Solid single color kits (shirts, shorts, socks) are the most common kit in the league even if we ignore solid white.

  • There is WAY too much solid white and solid black in this league.

  • New York Red Bulls are all over the map. They've worn solid red or solid white more than the sets they claim are their actual kits: red/white/red and white/red/white.

  • NYCFC has worn a sky blue/white change kit as a secondary 3 times and their claimed solid gray change kit only once.

  • Thank goodness for FCD's blue socks or else there would be 5 teams that wear solid red. Generally speaking, from this chart you can see why I'm trumpeting the red/white/blue kit for Dallas after the death of hoops.

  • While there are a LOT of teams with a red, white, and blue color in their badge and branding, there is actually only one team that wears a Red/Blue combo and that's FC Dallas. (It's maybe even a red/white/blue combo but we're ignoring the white panel and calling that a "red" jersey) The Revs don't mix the red and blue. Chicago and RSL only use blue as a trim color.

  • I've always wished FCD had stayed red and black, I liked that combo. This year only Atlanta United used Red and Black. For DC United and Toronto black/gray is really just a trim color.

For this breakdown, I've ignored the Earth Day black/white kits. Those were 1 off specials.

Pattern

Not evident in the chart are teams that use a pattern consistently and have stuck with it for a while now. These are the rare teams using a pattern as part of their identity. Like FC Dallas used to do with hoops but no longer do.

Stripes: Atlanta United, Montreal Impact
Bar: Chicago Fire
Slash: LA Galaxy
Hoops: None (sigh)

By the way, if you are a kit nerd like me you might enjoy our 20 Years: FC Dallas Jerseys post from earlier this year.

In case you are curious, here's last year's complete chart.
